The Innovation Coin
Written by Chris Frederick, Founder & CTO
Imagine you get one "innovation coin" each year. How will you spend it?
We live in a world of exponentially increasing technology solutions. With each new tool and trend promising to be the next big thing, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and lose sight of the bigger picture. Everyone seems eager to introduce you to the latest solution, from vendors and marketers to friends and colleagues, all promising to be an easy fix.
Given all the inputs, how do you focus on the future without sacrificing the present? It's human nature to be drawn to new and exciting solutions, but we need to do so wisely. To help resist the urge to try everything new that comes across our desk, I employ a simple metaphor, "The Innovation Coin." Think of it as an organizational budget for new technologies. You have only one coin to spend each year. This rule forces you to carefully evaluate the potential benefits of any new solution and consider how it stacks up against other opportunities. Limiting yourself to just one innovation per year allows you to implement only the best innovations while at the same time protecting your time to continue to excel in the present.
I hope you can try out the "Innovation Coin" idea in your organization. If you do, let me know if it helped!
