Why You Don’t Need Technology (At Least, Not Like You Think)

Written by Chris Frederick, Founder & CTO

“Technology isn’t the solution; it’s the problem.”

That may sound strange coming from a Chief Technology Officer, but hear me out. Too often, organizations get caught up in chasing the latest technological trends and lose sight of what truly matters — their mission. Your focus should be on the impact you’re making, not on the technology you’re using. Unfortunately, it’s far too familiar to find that an organization’s workflows dictated by technology constraints rather than what’s best for achieving your goals.

Here are my top four reasons why technology should take a back seat to your mission:

  1. Keep Your Focus on Mission: Your mission is what drives your organization. That’s where your energy should be — not managing or troubleshooting technology. The best tech solutions operate smoothly in the background, enabling your work without demanding your attention. When technology starts to overshadow your mission, it becomes a distraction, not a tool.

  2. Prioritize Efficiency and Simplicity: Technology should make your life easier, not harder. The right tools streamline processes, automate repetitive tasks, and ensure you have easy access to the information you need. When implemented correctly, technology should make things simpler, allowing you to spend more time on what truly matters: serving your community and fulfilling your mission.

  3. Depend on Reliable Support: Even the best technology isn’t perfect. When things go wrong — and they inevitably will — it’s critical to have reliable support. You need a partner who understands your unique needs and can help bridge the gap between what the software offers and what your organization requires. Good support minimizes the burden of technology on your team, ensuring it’s a help rather than a hindrance.

  4. Your Workflow Comes First: Technology should adapt to you, not the other way around. Your existing workflows have been built to serve your mission — don’t let a new system derail that. The best tech solutions integrate seamlessly into your current practices, enhancing them rather than forcing you to overhaul them. Technology should empower you to do what you already do well, but more efficiently.

At the end of the day, technology is just a tool. It’s there to support your mission, not to become your focus. When you keep tech in its rightful place — behind the scenes — you can stay mission-driven, and ensure that your technology is truly working for you, not against you.
